Grand opening exhibition-Tokugawa shogun and the art of the Meiji Era (Part I) [Yokohama Museum of Art]

I went to the Yokohama Museum of Art in the mid-weekend of this month, and I saw “the great and the opening of the Tokugawa shogunate and the art of the Meiji era”. Because there were a lot of points which took the memo in the exhibition with a considerable volume, I think that I will introduce it separately in the prequel part. In addition, this exhibition has four different exhibitions, especially since it seems to change greatly in the first and second and third to fourth periods, so if you have a work you are looking for, we recommend that you check the list of works on the official page before you go out.

This exhibition, as its name suggests, is an exhibition commemorating the 150th anniversary of the opening of Yokohama, and this year, the Yokohama Museum of Art is also the 20th birthday. There seemed to be a upheaval in the art association from the port opening to the Meiji era, and in this exhibition, I think that the change of the age and the location “Yokohama” were focused.
The exhibition consisted of Chapter 3, “The age of one chapter of the river”, “the era of the opening of chapters 2” and “Chapter 3 Meiji Era”. Today, I would like to introduce the works that I liked in chapter 1-2. (Because the actual display order was different from the work No, I put the work No just in case. Sorry if the corner is wrong W)

The first chapter of Tokukawa ERA >
[1. A mogul and Tokugawa shogun of the Edo period]
In this corner, a work related to the last general (the 15th general) Tokugawa Yoshiyoshi was introduced from the eleventh Shogun Tokugawa, who was called a mogul.

54Kano Seigawa-in Shinshin “Shiki Beauties Figure folding Screen” ★ Can be seen here.
It is a folding screen of a Yamato picture style. On the right, there are vivid pine trees, cherry blossoms, herons, swallows and peacock gold bullion. In addition, the left ship is depicted the same as autumn grass, maple, plum with snow piled up, and duck. In a word, it was a work which drew the appearance of the Four seasons from the right to the left. I felt like I’m a little cartoonish deformed, but I liked the work of luxurious and elegant atmosphere.

7“Silver work” flower car/ikebana decoration/decorative shelf/cigarette tray/board/shogi board/decorative Objects “
It is a miniature of the product around the body of the silverwork. As the work name, a variety of miniature such as Go Set and tea utensils, baskets and bonsai sweet. Especially, the work like flower arrangement was splendid.

8“Bean Dolls”
It is a really bean-like doll of about 1cm. The doll of the cat which wore the has been lowered was especially cute! I make it with dexterity.

15Makoto Kano Katsukawa Masunobu “Tokugawa Isadin statue”
It is a portrait of a samurai with a fearless face that stands out for shaving marks on the head. This is a picture like a study before drawing a picture of the production of “Mrs Romain sketch”, but it was drawn in quite detail and could only be seen as a finished product.

23“Fukiage Yagai Mikado/The bird Cage/The flowerbed Baba and the horse attraction Chaya/
Takakaya Chaya overlooking the front yard of Takachochaya/Dove
Hiroshiba looking down from the landlord mountain “

It is a landscape painting. It is a work with a western atmosphere, and is painted with oil. It seems to use the same pigment as the ukiyo-E, but there was an explanation that it paints the glue water there. Is it related to Akita faction? I thought, but I did not know the details.

28Cavalry armor (Chest-uppers, Kabuto) (Gifts of Napoleon III)
It is a Western armor sent from Napoleon III to Tokugawa Yoshiki. The helmet is filled with Aoi’s crest. In fact, there is another one of these helmets, and it seems that the crest is upside down. I think it’s a friendly purpose, but if you send the crest is upside down, are you selling fights? I wonder if I do not think w anyway historically valuable goods.

2 The beauty of the Big Oku]
This is a feminine and graceful style of the exhibition. It is also a must-see for famous women of the Edo period such as Princess and Atsuhime.

57Kano Yukiyo Kunishin “Genji Monogatari-Wakana”
This is a gold folding screen of the Japanese picture style. It seems to be a work of the story of the Tale of Genji where the woman who wore it, the man who sits in the center, and the mansion and the garden are drawn. It was a work that drifts like a Japanese picture and graceful atmosphere.

38“Small hirolid black coat peony Karakusa gold and silver-Makie atsuhime (Tenzhang in)”
It is a gold makie of the Karakusa pattern, and there is only a lid? It seems to be the one that only the lid was made independently when thinking. It seems to have been used to put the belongings and cosmetics like the article of Atsushi Hime. Next, there was a hanging axis which drew the scenery of Kagoshima, too. It was a feeling of the aesthetic of Atsuhime.

34“Hina-Tool Satsuma Kiriko Atsuhime (Tenzhang-in-in)”
This is a lot of art fans I saw recently? This spring was held at the Suntory Museum of Art, and it is a miniature doll tool that was exhibited in the Satsuma Kiriko exhibition.★ Reference Articles
Such a Trousseau tool is also considerably fired up and is made in the marriage which put the prestige of the Satsuma clan, and is finely precise. I think that it is a beautiful, pretty and wonderful article without knowing such a background.

43“Kuronuri Peony-Makie Stationery temple (Shizuhiro-miya)”
It is a small brush case and ten thin brushes. It is delicate and graceful that the peony and the Phoenix are drawn. There was a feminine cuteness, too.

Chapter 2: The era of port opening >
Chapter 1 was still in the Edo period, but this chapter was the theme of the age of confusion around the port of black ships from the time it came to Uraga. It was one of the most uninspiring chapters to see how Europeanization was.

63Chasen Takagawa, “Photograph of a man with a tough rice”
Perry, the deputy Adams, the interpreter’s URI Yamas? It is a portrait of three people. Perry has a grimace as usual. W Adams was smoking cigarettes, interpreter was like a suspicious figure with such a feeling w three people suspicious with black glasses w

88Song River (Tamansai Bridge book Ken) Sadinshu “All figures of the Port of Yokohama” ★ Can be seen here.
It is a brocade picture. It is depicted in the composition as seen from the top of Yokohama port diagonally. There are Japan, Netherlands, United States, England, Russia and France warships in the Gulf. In addition, Mt. Fuji was drawn in the upper right corner with finely drawn streets. It was interesting in the work that can easily know the state of the time that there is a little deformed.

71Cast iron branding “Japan Government mark”
It seems to have been used for the letter to the foreign country by the big seal written “Mark of Japan government”. ”Japan government” is the sound from this time? It was quite big and splendid.

79Antonio Beato “The European ambassador and the Sphinx” ★ Can be seen here.
This is a long time ago, there are many people who know because it was introduced in the program of the Fountain of trivia. This is a black and white photograph of about 20 samurai in front of Egypt Sphinx. They are members of the Yokohama chain Port Negotiation mission, and they seem to be sightseeing on the way to negotiate the chain port. The different combinations of samurai and sphinx are interesting.

84Felice Beato “Yokohama”
It is a photograph painted the color. In front of a Western-style mansion, there are people who carry bales of rice. It seems that the West and the Japan live together as the primary colors, and there is a different fascination with the present. I guess it was quite a different culture.

85Felice Beato, the scene of the murder of Mr. Richardson, the scenery of Tokaido
It is a famous photograph which took the site of the raw wheat case, and this was seen in the textbook! I was reminded of the calm appearance that was painted W photo, I was so relaxed that I do not think that the historical major incident occurred here. It might be the charm of this corner that there are a lot of witness exhibits of such a history.

Ninety.Song River (Gokumo-Tei) Sadanshu “Yokohama Shokan Makoto Figure” ★ Can be seen here.(Part 2)
Is this a work that was also in the Fukuzawa Yukichi exhibition? The woman in the kimono and the woman in the dress do the Hagoita or the Chinese? And the appearance that the people who did the turban are working are drawn. There was a translation, and it was written, “I”, “I”, “I”, what language, English? It is interesting to see how the exchange with foreign countries has progressed.

97Utagawa Hiroshige “Yokohama Kaigan Railway Steam Car Map” ★ Image Search Results
It is a brocade picture of the steam locomotive which runs the port. There are many foreign ships in the back. It is drawn by the technique of Japan, but the scenery is like the West, and the appearance of Europeanization Yokohama is transmitted. Even so, the train is running in the sea!

102Kawabe Akisai “Gyosai raku painting Sunami School” ★ Image Search Results
This is a picture of a school of Youkai. Enma-ish is described by pointing a panel with a pole and a blood pond of the demon is drawn. In the foreground, the kappa teach the kappa to the board of SI RI CO TA MA. It is a cute picture with a sense of humor, but the Europeanization is progressing to hell W is very interesting.

So, it is an intermediate between the art exhibition and the museum exhibition, but I have seen this in a textbook! There is such a thing, and it is interesting in the dramatic content which understands a transition period of the history well.
And the next part will be introduced in Chapter 3, the Meiji era. As well as the “Imperial Treasures Exhibition (the first semester)”, we were able to see the works of the accomplishments members of the Teiuro.
